The Story

Double D woke up early, way before the sunrose to set off on an adventure with a friend. at 4:30AM our friend arrived at our apartment and we were off.

After a short side quest to obtain fuel we continued on our journey. We arrived at the Hummocks Trail trailhead by 6:30am. The lot was practically empty, everyone else must have slept in!! The morning was brisk 38°F, adding an extra layer and donning our packs we set off.

The trail started out in a grove of trees, the skinny kind with small green leaves. The forest was quiet and the trail gently snaked around and up. Our first glimpse of Mount Saint Helens and her snowy crater was at the juncture of the Hummocks Trail and the Boundary Trail. We would be taking the Boundary Trail our destination being the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

The trail started to climb and I was glad I had my trekking poles. Mount Saint Helens stayed visually in front of us as we worked our way to our destination. We stopped often to catch our breath long enough to have it taken away by the beauty of Mount Saint Helens.

Due to illness we were unable to complete the hike, however, Double D will return to conqure this hike.

Trail Conditions

The trail was in fantastic shape, easy to navigate. There was one intersection that caused a bit of confusion but our Gaia map got us going in the correct direction. We turned around about 3.5 miles in and probably half a mile prior to that the trail does get a bit narrow and loose rocks. Nothing a side step and trekking poles couldn't help with. Overall would recomend.
